Challenge

Problem

The improper disposal of organic food waste is contributing to  Environmental and Social Crisis.

Environmental crisis

  • Improper management of organic food waste contributes to 95% of Methane emissions (UNEP, 2022)

  • Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic GHG after carbon dioxide (CO2)

  • Methane is more than 28 X as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Social crisis

  • Half of the world population relies on the informal sector for waste management, particularly in the Global South (WEF, 2023).

  • The informal sector is comprised of waste pickers who are the most marginalized communities in the world suffering from extreme poverty, abuse and exploitation.

  • Organic food waste in waste sites and dumps exposes waste pickers, who lack basic safety equipment, to health  risks and diseases.

How can you take small steps in your daily life to combat the global climate crisis?

“The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”

-Chinese proverb

Solution- Composting

Reducing food waste and composting has more emissions  reduction potential than EVs, recycling, high speed rails and walkable cities combined.

Black gold

Rather than worthless waste, compost is a valuable resource. This black gold can maintain soil health, enhance water retention and restore natural ecosystems. In can indeed make you dirt rich!

Why are more people not composting? Can you relate to one of the following? Then this is for you!

“I was interested, but found information in Youtube videos too complex.  What to add and not? What to do when it rains or there is high humidity? How to prevent pests from coming in? What to do about eggshells? I'm not so sure, I’ve always been confused about that.”

Male, 28, Peru

“We used to compost but then it got infested with bugs and so I stopped my husband from doing it. I want to know how to stop the bad smell and bugs.”

Female, 32, India

 -Environmental Educator

“It is difficult to find simple and engaging formats to gain people’s attention and teach them about composting. Kids have low attention spans these days. Even videos can feel monotonous to them. Average citizens are unaware and don't know how to compost.”
